Why A Newsletter?

In an effort to provide our customers with more value and service, Maass Flange & Fitting Canada, Inc. is pleased to present you this first edition of what is planned to be a monthly newsletter.  We hope you will find useful information on flanges and fittings as well as keep up to date with what is new at Maass Canada.  Please, feel free to print this page out and circulate it throughout your organization, and encourage everyone to visit and browse this web site.  The URL is www.maass.on.ca .  We would like your feedback regarding both the newsletter and our web site.  We would also like to have your suggestions (wants and/or needs) for future topics related to flanges and fittings.

Specifications

We have chosen to start by giving you some dimensional tolerances covering ASME B16.5 flanges.  This standard covers dimensions, tolerances, materials, proper marking, testing, and pressure-temperature ratings for flanges in the 1/2" through 24" NPS range.  Rating Classes include 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500.  Did you know that 1/2" through 2 1/2" NPS 900lb. flanges are identical to 1500lb?  Also, the only difference between a 1" 300lb. and a 1" 600lb. is the faces which are 1/16" and 1/4" respectively.  ASME B16.5 is where you will find these dimensions and other details like the fact that Class 150 and 300 flanges are normally furnished with a 1/16" raised face which is included in the flange minimum thickness and length through hub.  However, Class 400 and higher are supplied with a 1/4" raised face which is in addition to the thickness and length through hub.  From facings to bolting to marking or testing, B16.5 covers the topic or refers you to the applicable standard which does.

While B16.5 applies to sizes up to 24" NPS, it is B16.47 you must turn to for larger diameters of 26" through 60" NPS.   The most common piece of information left out of inquiries for large diameter flanges is which of Series A or B the

customer requires.  Series A are generally used while Series B are compact flanges that, in general, have a smaller OD, thickness, length through hub, and bolt circle.  Series A or B (the old MSS and API respectively) should always be specified and is particularly important when mating flanges to existing product.

Other Specifications kept on file here at Maass Canada include; B16.36 - Orifice Flanges, B16.11 - Forged Socketweld & Threaded Fittings, and B16.9 - Buttweld Fittings to name a few.

If you have any questions regarding flanges and fittings, specifications, or materials, please give us a call or contact us right here through the web site and one of our highly qualified people will have the answer for you.
